2.  What type of martial arts are you teaching at Yong In Taigon Taekwondo?

We teach Olympic style Taekwondo.  We promote the sport and the physical exercises and skills of Taekwondo, Martial Arts and Self Defense, never its spiritual or asian meditative aspects.  Some people ask what is the difference between Olympic style and traditional Tae Kwon Do style.  If you are practicing traditional Taekwondo style, that means that your school puts more emphasis on hand techniques rather than kicking techniques. Don't confuse traditional taekwondo with OLYMPIC Style Taekwondo.  If your school practice Olympic style Taekwondo, that means that your school puts more emphasis towards kicking to better prepare you toward competitions.  Olympic Style taekwondo allows you to experience the kicks, turns, and winning techiques used in the Olympic games.

In addition, to complement and enhance our curriculum, you will  learn basic takedowns, joint manipulation, control techniques, pressure points, weapons self defense and multiple attacker self defense.

3.  I have previous martial arts experience in Taekwondo, will I be able to join your school and keep my belt level?  We teach Olympic style Taekwondo.  You will have to schedule a private appointment with one of our instructors to access your skill level at no charge to you prior to registering in our school. If you are Black Belt:  You must provide a copy of your WTF Dan certification not later than the date of your scheduled appointment. This requirement is essential in order to have your Dan rank recognized. Also, only V-neck, white doboks with our school logo are allowed in our school.  If your dan rank was issued by another organization, other than the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF); you must be willing to submit application for WTF Dan request, include appropriate fees, and submit application to us by deadline to be consider for testing in our school.

4. Do we have to sign an agreement and for how long?

We offer month to month, 3, 6, 12, or 24 month agreements.  Student and Parent Commitment is required to reach goals.  What would you be teaching your child if you break your agreement. You will be setting up a cycle for your child to follow.  We need to teach him/her commitment 99% of the time to be able to reach their next goal in life.  If your child gets sick, they can make up later for the missed classes due to illness or injury.  When students have to spend summer out of state with their grandparents or other relatives you will have to let us know ahead of time so that we can FREEZE your account for the 1-2 months that your child will be out of state. We are commited to provide excellent service.  Together, we will teach your child how to deal with school better, how to become a better student, how to fend off peer pressure, how to deal with negative behavior, how to set goals, how to plan his/her future and what it takes to be a success in the real world.  We will also teach him how to defend himself in case he ever needs it. Don’t you think that is worth pushing your child on the days he/she doesn’t want to come?

5.  FAQ asked by all students white belt through Black Belts about WTF forms, techniques and applications please visit the World Taekwondo Federation:  http://www.wtf.org/site/about_taekwondo/poomsae.htm

6.  Questions and Answers on Taekwondo History and Philosophy please go to:

 http://www.wtf.org/site/about_taekwondo/philosophy.htm

7.  How long will it take me to become a Black Belt?
It depends upon your skills, dedication, time… and your perseverance.  In our school, it will take  you 3 years to get 1st Degree Black Belt certification through the Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Headquarters located in Korea. Promotion testings will take place every month, with the exception of Black Belt testings which will be scheduled twice a year.

To participate in a promotion test, you must meet 4 minimum requirements:
Know your belt level terminology, forms, and self-Defense techniques

Good Attendance
Time in belt level
Instructor’s recommendation

8.  Why using a billing company for tuition collection via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)?

I want to remind you that our billing company is for yours and our convenience. Our billing company handles all of our billing so that we can spend more time focusing on teaching and preparing for classes.  Imagine if we have to collect tuition checks from all our students on different days and times everyday. We would spend all of our time on bill collections leaving us no time to teach quality martial arts, prepare for classes, attend the newcomers, or focusing on areas necessary for the survival of our martial arts school.  Our curriculum is designed to teach your child how to deal with school better, how to become a better student, how to fend off peer pressure, how to deal with negative behavior, how to set goals and to follow through set goals just like a school institution.  Plus, we are going to teach him or her how to defend himself/herself in case he/she will ever needs it. We thank you for your understanding on this sensitive matter. Feel free to ask our customers about their experience with our billing system.

9. What if I am not sure that this is the right school for me?

Try our free classes or school trial before you sign up.  If you are not 100% satisfy at any time - We will cancel your contract.  We want you to be happy with your decision and with your training with us.  Stop by anytime during classes and feel free to ask parents for their opinion.

10.  Finding your Target Heart Rate with the simplify method:   To calculate your target heart rate, subtract your age from 220. Multiply that by .6 (60%).  Multiply that number again by .9 (90%).  The range between the two numbers is your target heart rate range.  For example, if you are forty years old:

220 - 40 = 180

180 X .6 = 108 low target

180 X .9 = 162 high target

START out at 60% and gradually increase your intensity as you improve your conditioning.

Karnoven Formula
220-age=maximum Heart Rate
Maximum Heart Rate - Resting Heart Rate = Intensity
Intensity x .55 (minimum intensity) + Resting Heart Rate = THR zone

220 - (your age) = Max Heart Rate (MaxHR)
MaxHR - (resting heart rate) = Heart Rate Reserve (HRR)
HRR x 85% = training range %
training range % + RHR = high end of your THR zone

For instance take a 43 year old with a resting Heart rate of 60:

220 - 43 = 177
177 - 60 =117
117 x .55 = 64 + 60 = 124
117 x .85 = 99 + 60 = 159

This gives a range of 55%-85% of a THR zone.

Simplified Method
220 - Age = Maximum Heart Rate
MHR x .55 = Minimum THR Zone
MHR x 85 = Maximum THR Zone

This is what it would look like with numbers plugged in.
220 - 43 = 177
177 x .55 = 97
177 x .85 = 150
